Q: Do I need experience to become a model?
No. Most models start with none. We look for presence, personality and potential, and the experience comes with development.
Q: How tall do you have to be to be a model?
She/her: 5'8"–6'0"
He/him: 6'0"–6'4"
They/them: 5'9"–6'0"
Q: How old do you have to be to be a model?
We do not represent children under 5'8". Applicants under 18 must be at least 5'8" and need permission from a parent or legal guardian to apply. If you're 13 or under, have a parent or guardian contact us directly.
Q: Do I need a portfolio to get signed?
No. Agencies sign models from digitals. Once you're signed, we help you build your portfolio (your "book") through test shoots.
Q: What are digitals (polaroids) and how do I take them?
Digitals are simple, natural photos taken in good lighting against a plain background.
• No makeup, and wear fitted clothing (a black tank top and jeans)
• Take a headshot, a full-length shot and a side profile
• No filters, no editing, no nude images
Q: What is a test shoot?
A photoshoot that builds your portfolio rather than one booked by a paying client. It's how new models get their first strong images. Some are done TFP (trade for print), meaning the model and photographer work in exchange for the images.
Q: What is a comp card?
A model's business card: your best photos, your measurements and the agency's contact info, all on one card. Clients use it to decide who to book.
Q: What is a mother agency?
A mother agency discovers and develops a model, then places them with agencies in larger markets. HOUS guides your career from your first digitals onward.
Q: What is a go-see or casting?
A go-see is a meeting with a client or photographer so they can see you in person. A casting is the same thing for a specific job.
Q: What does it mean when a client puts me on hold?
A hold (or option) means a client is considering you for a specific date. Keep that day free until it's confirmed or released.
Q: How do agencies get paid?
Agencies earn a commission on the jobs you book. When you work, we work.
Q: How much do models make in Canada?
It depends on the job. Commercial, e-commerce and editorial work all pay differently, and rates vary by client and usage. Your agent negotiates rates on every booking.
Q: Is modeling a full-time job?
It can be, but many models start part-time while building their careers.
Q: How important is social media for modeling?
Very. Many agencies and brands scout through Instagram and TikTok, so keep a professional, curated presence.
Q: How do I know if a modelling agency is legit?
A legit agency will:
